the only issue is that when measuring the distance between the points it came out as seen below. the points are also meant to be in a square not a line.Ĭan anyone tell me why I cant create these 4 simple locations into 4 points?Īfter listening to the comments, I used an online converter to convert the degree-min-dec-sec data into lat/long.įrom here I uploaded them into ArcGIS and got the desired shape I wanted (a simple box).

When I load the points in they produce a line of 4 points which can only be seen at 1:300 ratio (tiny). Once you have added the shapefile, make the Editor toolbar visible (choose Tools-Editor Toolbar). Nothing will show on the map because there are no features in the shape file yet. Why is this? When I open up the attribute tableĪfter this I then save the layer as a shapefile, but when I go to reload the shapefile, there is no data points at all. Adding and editing geographic features and attributes in ArcMap You can now add the new (empty) shapefile to ArcMap to begin the actual digitizing process. When I select the drop down box for Latitude and Longitude, it give me 5 options for both "X_Field" and "Y_Field" The first confusion comes at this point when I am greeted with this. I have added these Northing and Eastings into an Excel sheet and saved them as a CSV File (The CSV has the other two coordinates not shown in the second image).

Below are the Northing and Easting I have been given. Note: With most ArcGIS functions and tools, several methods can accomplish the same task. For more about shapefiles, see Shapefile in Wikipedia.

Choose a coordinate system from the tree or click the Import button and browse to a data source that is defined with the coordinate system you want to use. I am trying to add coordinates into ArcGIS 10.6.1. In ArcGIS, you can use data collected from a GPS device to create a shapefile containing points, lines, or polygon features. To define or change the projection of the dataframe: Right-click in the map and select Properties > Coordinate System.
